Greetings from Upward Bound 2008!

Upward Bound Summer Academy is a six week intensive academic program comprised of participating high school students from Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton High schools. UBSA curriculum is hands-on, experiential and service-learning based. The first half of the UBSA day is spent in project groups, which generate an end-product that benefits our community directly.  Project groups all include academics in core subject areas, such as science, writing, foreign language, and social studies.  The links below will give you more current information on the progress of these projects.   The afternoons of UBSA are dedicated to academic instruction in Mathematics, Literature/Composition, and Science. UBSA 2008  begins June 16 and ends with our project presentation in the evening of July 24.  UBSA is held at Clatsop Community College, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and Fridays are field trip days.

The 2008 UBSA project group leaders come from a variety of disciplines and represent several organizations and institutions throughout our community. Heading up "Mud, Bugs and Research: Wetland Restoration" is Lee Cain, a Field Science instructor from Astoria High School. Marian Tyson, a College Preparation instructor at Clatsop Community College, is leading "Glimpse of Invisible Cultures: Tribes of the Northern Oregon Coast."  Returning for a fourth year with UBSA, Josh Jannusch, a Science instructor at Warrenton High School,  is at the helm of "Seek and Destroy: Plotting the Demise of Invasive Species. " Poetry, Music and Rhyme: the Basics " is being facilitated by Yasemin Gadelhak, a Writing instructor with Clatsop Community College.  New to UBSA this year, Scott Carpenter, a member of the Social Studies faculty at Warrenton High School, is leading "A Teen Scene: 70's , 80's and 90's."

Our featured afternoon classes this year include two levels of Mathematics instruction, a Physics course, a Writing class and a Laboratory Science course.  Liz Hylton, part of the Mathematics faculty at Clatsop Community College,  will be teaching UBSA Mathematics classes this year.  Teaching a unique Engineering project design unit, Tim Roth, a Physics and Chemistry instructor at Astoria High School, will prepare Upward Bound students to compete at the 2009 Portland State University Engineering Design Competition. Dave Jolley, another UBSA veteran who comes all the way from Utah to participate in UBSA, will teach a laboratory science course with special emphasis on inquiry-based methods.  Sheri Billet, who introduced Upward Bound students to the fine art of persuasive writing during UBSA 2007, returns to teach a course on writing mechanics during the last two weeks of of UBSA 2008.  Sheri is part of the English faculty at Astoria High School.

Wiki = collaboration

Think of this wiki as a shared space. You can share information using this wiki, communicating with others and making your research accessible to everyone. Find your class listed below. Each group will have a different look and feel, as well as, guidelines for adding information. Once you get a feel for those guidelines, use the "edit button" at the top of the screen to add resources and information that you find relevant and helpful.

This resource is only as good as YOU make it. So, get out there, find some information, and share it with others!
